An Obituary and Bibliography

Dr. Rotraud Bauer, Curator Emeritus of the Kunstkammer and the Weltliche und Geistliche Schatzkammer at the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna, passed away on September 9, 2006, at the St.Veit Hospital in the region of Kaernten after several years of fighting cancer.

Rotraud Bauer was born in Vienna on January 31,1941, as the daughter of the painter Karl Bauer and his wife Leopoldina. She went to high school in Klagenfurt and then began her studies of German philology in Graz in 1959, but she switched the following year to art history and classical archaeology. She continued her studies from 1961 onward in Vienna. Her Ph.D dissertation dealt with the subject of Giovanni di Balduccio Alboneto da Pisa, ein Plastiker der ersten Hälfte des 14. Jahrhunderts, under the directorship of Prof. Dr. Otto Pächt. This gave her the opportunity to stay in Florence from 1966 to 1968. She enrolled for further classes at the University of Florence and at the German Institute for Art History, at the time under the directorship of Prof. Dr. Ulrich Middeldorf.

Shortly after her graduation in March of 1969, she succeeded to Dr. Elisabeth Scheicher-Mahl, who had been in charge of the textile collections at the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna, and who left the museum in August of that year to become director of Schloss Ambras, near Innsbruck. In accepting the position Rotraud Bauer started her life-time position, under the guidance of Dr. Erwin Neumann, head of the Sammlung für Plastik und Kunstgewerbe (since 1990: Kunstkammer). As she had no previous training in the textile arts, she studied this discipline on her own. This turned into a lifelong dedication. She devoted much attention and energy not only to art historical research but also to conservation and presentation of textile objects. She was in charge of the textile conservation laboratory at the Kunsthistorisches Museum, and taught classes about textile history for textile conservators at the Berufspädagogischen Bundeslehranstalt für Bekleidungsgewerbe in Vienna in 1982. In 1990 she taught the subject Textile within the discipline of the Decorative Arts at Vienna’s University and directed several papers and master theses’ in that field.

Rotraud Bauer contributed largely to stimulate more attention toward textiles, not only through her publications (see her Bibliography) but also by attending numerous conferences in her country as well as abroad (Italy, Germany, Belgium, the Netherlands, the UK and the USA), foremost about themes and subjects pertaining to the study of tapestry.

Rotraud Bauer considered the organization of temporary exhibitions one of the main tasks of a curator. Thus she put on view for the first time many major tapestry sets from the rich Viennese collections in several exhibitions, held at Castle Halbturn (Burgenland, Austria). The catalogues of these exhibitions remain the reference works in the field:
1975: Barocke Tapisserien aus dem Besitz des Kunsthistorischen Museums.
1976: Historische Schlachten auf Tapisserien aus dem Besitz des Kunsthistorischen Museums.
1981: Tapisserien der Renaissance nach Entwürfen von Pieter Coecke van Aelst.
1991: Wohnen im Schloß. Tapisserien, Möbel, Porzellan und Kleider aus drei Jahrhunderten.
Furthermore, she organised two exhibitions for Vienna:
1983: Tapisserien im Zeichen der Kunst Raffaels in the Horse Riding School of the Imperial Mews (Messepalast)
1992 Die Portugiesen in Indien. Die Eroberungen von Dom João de Castro auf Tapisserien 1538-1548, at the Kunsthistorisches Museum.
Through these six exhibitions she created tremendous interest among the numerous visitors and admiration from the art historical world.

Rotraud Bauer always broadened her knowledge by countless journeys and visits to world textile collections. This also helped to establish a network with the colleagues in the field. She exchanged information and shared her profound knowledge of the Viennese collections. This led eventually and above all to a vast international network of true friends and tapestry specialists.

Rotraud Bauer had fought the first cancer occurance in 1996. She decided to enroll in training for assisting people at the end of their lives, and applied this knowledge not only at the time when her own parents were dying but also to many other people she really did not know intimately. In doing so she gained widespread respect and tremendous admiration.

Rotraud Bauer’s premature death leaves a great void among her colleagues and friends. The long expected catalogue of the Viennese tapestry collection, which she intended to write after her retirement in December 2002, has been left in its initial stage, due to the illness and its various stages which she had to endure.

Her last commitment was the organization of an exhibition and a catalogue devoted to the work of her father, the painter Karl Bauer, commemorating the centenary of his birth. She saw this project to completion and the exhibition was held in Graz in 2005. This task was the last witness of her indestructible energy and vitality, which we shall forever remember.
